Proper packing of your removal boxes

Even though our carriers have extensive experience in handling private customers’ personal goods, it is still important that your boxes are packed properly for a long drive involving sharp turns, hard braking and uneven roads. The three most important things to remember are:

• Use professional cardboard boxes and make sure they are assembled correctly according to the instructions provided on the box. These boxes have thicker sides and are thus more sturdy. This way, the boxes can carry more weight, they can be stacked without collapsing, as well as they can withstand accidental shaking.
• Distribute the weight in your boxes evenly instead of putting all your heavy items in one box. This makes it much easier for both you and the driver when you have to carry the boxes to and from as well as load and unload the van. In addition, when the boxes weigh approximately the same they are much easier to stack safely. Note that the weight limit per box is 23 kg.
• Always pack fragile items in protective packaging. Are you, for example, sending mirrors, porcelain or the like, then be sure to wrap it in bubble wrap, towels, newspaper or other protective packaging. Be aware that you are responsible for ensuring that your items are packed properly to handle a long transit.

How long is transit?

The transit time varies slightly from trip to trip as it is determined by specific itinerary that is prepared individually from time to time. In this way, the transit time depends on the specific transport bookings we receive. As a rule of thumb, our vans make their way around Europe approximately every 18 days, but the exact transit time will, naturally, depend on the length of the respective route and the number of pickups and deliveries placed on the route. An example of a an 18 day route could be:

Stockholm – Copenhagen – Hamburg – Amsterdam – London – Paris – Barcelona – Madrid – Malaga – Lisboa – Madrid – Barcelona – Monaco – Milan – Verona – Munich – Hamburg – Copenhagen – Stockholm.

Along with your transport quote you receive an expected pickup and delivery date, and you can then decide whether the respective dates and transit time are relevant for your box removal.

What to know about pickup and delivery

Due to several factors, it can be challenging to provide a precise time for pickup and delivery several weeks before the removal takes place. For instance, the following are some of the factors that may cause changes in the schedule:

• Queue on the highway
• Punctured tires
• Traffic accidents
• Last minute bookings or cancellations that result in more or fewer stops on the route
• A customer who is not home at the agreed time

With that said, we always include extra time in the schedule to accommodate and reduce any changes in relation to the expected timeframes. In the event of any changes, we will, of course, make sure to keep you updated.

We aim to inform you about the expected pickup and delivery times as soon as possible, so you are able to plan your day accordingly. You’ll receive a 2 hour time slot for pickup and delivery at the latest 48 hours in advance. On the day of pickup and delivery our driver will contact you approximately 30 minutes before he arrives. Your boxes must be packed and ready by the curb as the driver arrives, and he will then help load/unload the van. If you live in an apartment complex and are not able to carry your boxes down/up yourself, you can add this service at an additional cost, if you make the request in advance. Transport insurance: How am I covered?

When transporting boxes with our Direct Van service you have the opportunity to purchase a transport insurance. A transport insurance typically entitles you to a higher compensation if any unforeseen damages or loss should occur. We partner with First Marine, who has extensive experience in handling insurance cases within the transport industry.

The cost of adding a transport insurance depends on the value of the goods you send + the transport costs. The calculation looks like this:

• Transport of private effects within Europe: 1.5 % of the total value, however, with a minimum value of GBP 87
• Transport of art/antiques within Europe: 4 % of the total value, however, with a minimum value of GBP 230

It is entirely up to you whether you want to add an insurance to your transport booking, however, we always recommend that you add the insurance if the items you are sending have a high acquisition value or are particularly fragile. This way you get the best coverage possible. Please note that there is a deductible of GBP 345 per incident (damage or loss).
